In keeping with their global safety standards, ExxonMobil had one clear objective: develop a wayfinding program that will help staff and visitors evacuate facilities quickly and safely in the event of an emergency. Cygnus was challenged with developing a program that was flexible enough to incorporate into any facility, while internal geographic sections within certain facilities needed to be clearly defined. The scope also included the development of location-specific evacuation maps for meeting rooms and exits, marking transition points between sections and raising the profile of designated interior and exterior assembly points. The final solution utilized a simple visual structure consisting of universally understood pictograms, easy to read maps and highly visible signage. The result is a simple and effective wayfinding system which was rolled out in two facilities in 2009. Plans are in place to carry this program through to more locations in the future.
